Asylum
To be granted asylum in the UK you must show that you have a well founded fear of persecution in your home country due to your political opinion, race, nationality, religion or membership of a particular social group. The laws governing asylum come from the 1951 UN Convention Relating to the Status of Refugees.
The European Convention on Human Rights which has been incorporated into UK law by the Human Rights Act 1998 has also expanded the rights of individuals to remain in the UK for protection and humanitarian reasons.
If you are claiming asylum in the UK it is important that you have legal representation as the asylum system is extremely complex and governed by tight deadlines.
