29th February 2008 saw the implementation of the Points-Based System via the Immigration, Asylum and Nationality Act 2006. Under this system any migrant worker applying to enter the UK must reach a certain point score which is calculated according to their various attributes including skills, qualifications and experience.
What is sponsorship?
Whereas before an employer has been required to obtain a work permit certificate, it is now necessary for you to apply for a licence to act as a sponsor for your migrant workers. Now if you apply to register as a sponsor it will enable you to apply on an individual basis for leave to enter for each of your migrant workers.
Who does it apply to?
Any business wishing to employ migrant workers, who are not nationals from within the European Economic Area, should apply to become sponsors now.
Applications for skilled workers are being taken from this autumn with other categories of workers being phased in after that period. It is therefore essential that applications for sponsorship are made now in time to meet this deadline and to ensure that your workers can start on time.
