New Control to protect jobs for the British Workforce

Monday, 7th September 2009

The UK Government announced a raft of new measures to ensure that the resident labour market will have every opportunity to fill vacanies before they are offered to workers from abroad.

The main changes are:

  1. From next year all jobs must be advertised to the resident job market for 4 weeks in the jobcentreplus instead of the current 2 weeks before a company can advertise the position overseas
  2. Overseas workers who want to transfer to work for their company's UK base will now need to have worked for the firm for at least 1 year instead of the current 6 months
  3. The minimum salary for a worker to qualify has a skilled worker will increase to £20,000 from £17,000
